Lennox Head rapper has his sights set on the States. When no one was answering the door here in Australia, Whiplash headed to the United States. In the US Joshua Lewan is making a name for himself in the hip-hop world. But he isn't the only Aussie taking their rapping skills to the US recently, with Mullumbimby's Iggy Azalea leading the way (and fielding offers from Kanye West). Lewan (aka Whiplash) is based in Lennox Head after growing up in Byron Bay and Suffolk Park and despite his musical aspirations overseas he's keen to keep his base in the region. "A lot of people in Australia just don't know about (my music)," Lewan tells Pulse. "But I hide this music from a lot of people. I don't have the connections I have in the USA that I need in Australia to put it out here. In the US I am hon- oured to be next to names like Lil Wayne, Rihanna, Eminem, 50Cent, Dr Dre and the list goes on." It doesn't take too much to figure out why an aspiring hip-hop artist, whose influence lies in Snoop Dogg, Eminem, Ice Cube and Xzibit would head to greener (or bigger) pastures in the US. "When I listened to other artists rap it connected with me and my life," Lewan says. "I wasn't born in the ghetto but I have stayed in ghettos, slept on streets and beaches in different countries. "I have experienced that hopeless way of living and feeling for years; rap was a way for me to vent the truth that I couldn't reveal so much in everyday life." Whiplash has recently received a big boost in the States where he features on more than 300 mixtapes (including three of his own) alongside anyone from Ghostface Killah to Ludacris. "I have been collaborating with some sick rappers from the USA who approached me via email and I was happy to work with them," Lewan says. "The producers and artists I work with have all approached me the same way and came with nothing but respect so my hat was off." Tha Advocate, an artist out of New Jersey, has opened the door for the keen rapper. Tha Advocate was releasing a series of mixtapes, Digital Dynasty, hosted by artists Xzibit, Naughty By Nature and, now, Whiplash. "I wanted to be a part of that movement so I basically submitted songs to be featured over there," he says. "Although Tha Advocate has to really like your song; if he doesn't you're not on." Getting noticed hasn't been easy though. Lewan started sending his work around the world in 2009 and hasn't stopped since. "It was no different to job searching," he says. "When you are knocking eventually someone has to open a door or you are going to just break it down. I got so many knock-backs all over the world so I wanted to at least have my USA connections." Next month Lewan heads to the US to film his first video clip alongside Tha Advocate, Bad In Me. The next we'll be seeing him... "Hopefully in your homes," he says. "A household name or on stage at festivals and clubs. "I am going to push to make it in the USA first and if I can do that I can make it in Australia and worldwide." When it comes to grinding Whiplash is setting the bar high for todays on the come up rappers. Whip’s newest EP is the appropriately titled “Rap-A-Holic“. That must be the only way to describe Whip’s addiction for crafting music to suit his fan base. He teams up again with Mozart Jones, for the production side of things, and makes things happen a lot smoother this time around. The project opens up with “Dying Is Easy.” This track finds Whiplash in deep retrospect focusing on his life. The ups and downs, pros and cons and the harsh realities of struggling in this thing we call life. Whiplash has a nack for writing catchy hooks and this song is rewind worthy. Don’t be surprised if this will be stuck in your head for the next day or so. You can see the mind state Whip is in when he spits “Living is hard, dying is easy/ just keep living and dying will please me.” There isn’t a better choice to kick this EP off with then “Dying Is Easy”. The self-titled, “Rapaholic”, song finds Whiplash spitting over a trancy Frankenstein sounding foundation while double time flowing bars like “I’m out of mind, complex, complex, complicating/ what you say is different meanings.” It’s almost like Whip loses his mind on this song and speaks with “different meanings”. It’s almost like he was possessed while bringing this raw energy. Whiplash just made a hip hop rave song. The track is weird and different, yes, but hypnotizing and wild. The mixture travels the realms of classic hip hop and bridges them with intense horror core / trance elements and makes Mr. Lash truly a “Rapaholic.” “Real Thing” shows Whiplash exploring his options while keeping it real on a funky instrumental. It’s another classic Whiplash branded song, with one of the best hooks he layered to date. “Pride to Show” and “Blessing and Curse” are both equally respectable and also demonstrate the blue print Whip is laying out in letting his fans know what he is about. This project is more in tune from Whip’s last few projects. He seems more focused on this one and his lyrics are in key with the subject matter. One thing we would like to see from the Aussie artist is a wider range of topics, not just personal ones. Hearing Whiplash doing a song about his countries politics, the state of hip hop or even a relationship song would be interesting and would show a more evolved consciousness. “Rapaholics” recording quality and mixes are way better than before. Hearing Whip with a clear quality and a bounce to the tracks displays his message a lot better than before. This EP is a sure shot from the land down under. Guess who’s back on the scene? It’s Whiplash and Mozart teaming up and bringing another EP. Whiplash is infamous for alligning himself with on the come up artists with a buzz and cracking out new mixtapes with them. We have seen him team up with Khaki Blue, Hotline and now Mozart over the past 700 days. Not too mention Whips latest single “Bad In Me” which features buzz worthy underground emcee Tha Advocate is making major noise all over the internet. Whip is putting in work and this team up with Mozart is extending the chain of command. The first record on the project is “b***h At Your Door”. This particular track has Whiplash spitting on a dirty south beat. The 3rd verse Whip spits with a double time flow with his trade mark adlibs. On “Out Of This Place” we hear a more aggressive angry Whiplash that we haven’t heard before. He sounds fully charged as he raps ” I got to stay pissed off to write the best rhymes.” Whiplash brings a real life coinscence track with “Seek To Breathe” as well as “Take Me Away.” In fact if “Take Me Away” had a proper mix then it could possibly reign in the next single for Whiplash to push. The recording quality wasn’t up to par with some earlier releases from Whiplash. The vocals were mixed low on some songs and some verses were hard to understand. Without proper mixing it can ultimatley destroy a project with that type of clarity. Now before we say that this flaw over shadowed the actual compilation we have to take into consideration Whip’s hooks, melodies, verses and song writing ability. Over all the EP is downloadable and worth your money, it is another brick in the wall of the building Whiplash is creating. This isn’t the best we heard from Whip, but it’s not a bad project. We hope on the next go around the mixes are better because Whiplash is evolving as an artist and he shouldn’t be outcasted because the engineer had a rough day. After announcing the upcoming release in late November, we received a slew of submissions, and after weeding through a ton of material ... here it is: the latest installment of our free digital mixtape series, Digital Dynasty 18, hosted by Shady Records' Cashis. "This is the best way to end the year off. This mixtape is flames from front to back," says founder, Tha Advocate. "Looking back, 2011 was a productive year for Digital Dynasty. We dropped our retail album, and did volumes with Saigon, Jaz-O and Cashis. Not too mention, we dropped my mixtape The Breaking Point ... I can't wait to see what next year brings." This new tape boasts over 40 tracks from up-and-comers with some heat, who needed a little shine to show off their talent. We also mixed in some new bangers, as well as heaters from our host. Whiplash – Rapanease (EP Review) Sometimes new artists are so hungry for a deal they just sign the dotted line to some companies empty promises. One of HipHopLead.com’s most featured on the come up artists made that mistake. Before you started hearing Whiplash on several Digital Dynasty and Coast to Coast mixtapes he was on a label called Dasvibes, based out of Jamaica, and he recorded a short album called “Rapanease.” Unfortunately that project wasn’t promoted right, despite distribution from Universal, it just sat in the dark for 3 years. Not too mention Whip’s own country of Australia banned the project. Well now the contract is expired and Whiplash is re-releasing his project on his own. With that said … guess what just came across our desk?… Yep .. you guessed it. Rapanease kicks off with a self titled synth record with plenty of high hat and crunchy kicks. Whip coasts over the foundation as he spits “fuck I’m stuck in a rut/ I can’t even get a slut cuz I don’t have a buck.” It seems Whiplash’s modesty is still untarnished from his early days. Next up is an Eminem sounding “Everything’s Wrong,” Whip is very animated on this record as he speaks about “bitches always giving attitudes” and tons of other random thoughts. This is definitely a record to let loose too. Whip usually rocks with the west coast sounding beats, but on “Out Of Home” the drums are vintage east coast and it actually seems to have Whiplash focused a bit more time wise with his delivery. “Level to Reach” may be the weak link of the project. The amateur mix has the bassline so loud that it takes away from the lyrics and makes the song sound a bit muffled. The project highlight, by a long shot, is “Ghetto Surfer.” Whip is a surfer … from Australia…. who raps about hardships. This might be the most auto biographical song on the project. The horns and drums set the canvas for the picture Whip paints as he speaks about “being a ghetto surfer trying to make it” and how needs to “get ahead and be free.” Potential is what speaks volumes when hearing “Ghetto Surfer.” Whiplash basically speaks on struggle on this project. It was more serious then corky and in 2011 he is definitely a more loose cannon then on this project. If Australia banned this project due to content then the present day Whiplash stands no chance of selling his records on his own turf. Some of the production isn’t up to par with present day records from Whip like “Bad In Me” or “Pay Up,” but what do you expect when an artist first makes his entrance into the game. Whip releasing this project himself is like Jay Z wanting his Reasonable Doubt master back. It’s an artists first fling with this thing we call Hip Hop. Pro's- Whiplash has an original diverse style and not only raps but has the talent to craft his own melodic hooks (ex. "Bad In Me" and "Living"). He proves on this mixtape to be more of a song writer rather than just a rapper. Whip also dives into topics that some other artists might not venture too... a risk taker sums up this artist's performance on the "Losing Control Mixtape." Con's- Once in a while Whiplash goes off topic and ends up freestyling, rather then writing his verses. Most off the head freestyles are only acceptable at live shows. The recording process requires a much more focused and thought out display of verses rather then random brain farts. (for ex. "Booty Shorts" and "Fuck The World.") Whiplash – Losing Control (Mixtape Review) The intro kicks off Sean Macnamara from “Nip Tuck” losing his mind once he finds out that his son isn’t his from his then wife, Julia. In fact, every vane in his head pops out when he finds out his son is actually fathered by his best friend. An Intro like that builds the mood up for the crazy antics of, Australian artist, Whiplash . This is his newest mixtape (Losing Control) and possibly the most crazy. After the cinematic intro Whip delivers “Living.” That particular song finds Whip on a trippy West Coast sounding beat. Whip’s melodic hook speaks wonders when he sings “Life is short so enjoy what’s given/ Get everything you need and start living/. Whip touches a few nerves with his bold alfa male raps on “Let’s Go” and “Moments Are Bound.” Whip lashes out extra hard when he spits “Most of the time I can’t get a date/ because most of the time I wanna date, to get a fuck mate/. One thing we notice about Whiplash is his evolving artistry in each project. “You Can’t Handle It” and “Bad In Me” should be getting spins on Australian hip hop radio stations while “Growing Seed” is a very effective club banger.
Some records could have maybe stayed unreleased like “Fuck The World” and “Booty Shorts.” Those 2 records were more about cursing and venting then actual flow and lyrics. If Whiplash would craft some verses a little bit better then sometimes the listener might not scratch there head while trying to figure out what point he was trying to relay. Another minor set back, for an on the come up artist, is having 6 to 7 bonus songs of material that you aren’t featured on. It might actually confuse the first timers while listening to your project you hand crafted. Whiplash may not have delivered his best mixtape yet, but we may have heard his best songs to date. Even tho the project had a few blemishes songs like “You Can’t Handle It” and especially the catchy “Bad In Me” make this worth the download. The download will be dropping on Coast 2 Coast mixtapes very soon and there is an album version available for purchase. Make sure you support this artist on his grind. Whiplash – Whip-Mix (Mixtape Review) This guy just won’t stop. Australia’s rising star hits us with another release. WhipLash’s new mixtape called “Whip-Mix”, is a 19 song mixtape of popular song remixes, Hosted by Tha Advocate. The majority of the music is remixed hits but Whip finds time to deliver a few original cuts aswell. After Advo’s Intro Whiplash hops on the Wiz Khalifa “Black and Yellow” smash. Whip actually adds a soothing harmony to the Wiz Hook. Whip steals the first verse placement while delivering lines like “My name is Whiplash/ (glass breaking sounds) My aim is to get the hits smashed/ tits and ass/ My ship tipped to crash/ But I still try to rip the shit in half/ and spit on this hit to last./” As you can see Whips wordplay is evolving on each release. The less freestyle he does and the more writing makes for a better verse. Keeping the high energy in tact Whip goes buckwild on T-Pain’s “Motivated” and shares the same adrenaline rush on Ace Hood’s “Hustle Hard.” One thing about Whip is his singing isn’t bad for a rapper at all. Whip lashes out on the hook for “Runaway.” On top of delivering a smooth harmony he adds a not-so rememberable verse. There were a few stutters on that remix that could have been fixed lyrically on Whip’s performance. Whiplash adds some dope insight to “Airplanes Pt. 2.” while letting us know he is the “average joe.” If you heard Whiplash’s album “Losing Control,” you might have heard a few cuts like Spaceship Swag, Chances, Clap On, and Ladidah. These songs get a second life on the “Whip-Mix” release. Lets remention how dope “SpaceShip Swag” and “Ladidah” really are. Whip sounds like he is at home with these records. They both have a airy sound while keeping you locked in with the hypnotic hooks. Some of the bonus cuts are highlights on this project aswell. Tha Advocate delivers one hell of a record on “What U Wanna Do.” Advo goes in on a lyrical slugfest speaking about how the industry is losing substance and fans need to “punch a rapper up in the mouth” for making that trash. Khaki Blue and Tha Advocate team up on the “Gun Runner” remix. Khaki plays the part of a local gun runner and Advo’s verse displays him in a compromising position searching for some heat to cool down his problems. The song is vivid and keeps the listeners at bay. Whiplash has no plans to stop anytime soon. As we said before he knows how to make a song, but if he would focus on his lyrics a bit more and craft them old school style with a pen and pad he will have a project that would be a milestone in his career. Whip has his own style and his own lane and is bringing that Aussy style right to the front door of North America. Like it or hate it you have to respect his power play moves. Whiplash – The American Dream Time flies when you’re having fun, but in this case it flies even faster when you are hard at work. It’s been half a year since we first chopped it up with Whiplash. If by some chance you missed the first interview let us bring you up to speed. Whiplash has been making noise via the internet and high profile mixtapes in the last 2 years. He has been able to do this while being thousands of miles away from the mecca of hip hop. So now as summer is creeping on a come up in the states we are gonna reach over long distance and chop it up with Australia’s Whiplash. HipHopLEAD: Whats good Whip? It been a while… Whiplash : Hey HipHopLead what’s good? It’s good to be back…yeah it has been half a year already! Time really does fly and then we die (laughs). HipHopLEAD: Man … sometimes we interview artists and they just fizzle out in due time. But you have been making more mixtape appearances, more album appearances, and been interviewed all over the place. I have to ask… what’s next on your agenda? Whiplash : Yeah I see people come and go but I just keep at it and stay consistent. I have been managing my finances a little better so I can afford to make some moves. Some companies have thrown me some promo deals so that helps. I live with my parents so I can afford to put stuff out. That is why I haven’t moved out of home yet. It means more money for my career options so thanks fam. I give up that independence of living alone. I really can’t afford to do any of this, but I want to, so I try anything to get by. I recently paid an agency to try and hunt me down a deal in the US. I gave them two months to have a sniff around and submit my music to labels. My music has been sent to around 25 record labels so far. See how it goes? I know I already got knocked back by Obese records in Australia and some other label I never heard of? The next move for me is releasing my own mixtape called Whip-Mix hosted by Tha Advocate and a collaboration album with Khaki Blue from Los Angeles. I have been mixing songs for that collaboration album and it sounds great; it has a real west side sound. I am starring on two different Coast 2 Coast The Indie Top 50 albums coming out sooner or later. That is a deal where you get the front cover and 5 songs featured. HipHopLEAD: We got a call from Advo who told us he signed on to host your upcoming mixtape, “Whip-Mix.” We understand it is remixes some of your songs. Can you tell us how that idea came about? Whiplash : I was looking at my budget and I decided to go with putting out a mixtape of remixes with original songs because I got a couple of affordable deals. From January to May 2011 I had 176 mixtape album/single song features and the songs with the most features were Whip-Mixes; remix of famous songs. My decision was based on numbers. My Whip-Mixes had more downloads and features overall than the original songs, even though they were close numbers. I also wanted to use remixes as a way of promoting my name but not giving away too many of my original songs that are released digitally. One way to get people to listen to you is doing cover songs or remixes, people want to see how good or bad your version is. I had seen the big number views on Khaki Blues – The West Allstars Mixtape hosted by Tha Advocate on HipHopLead.com and Datpiff.com and the numbers were great. I wanted to get Advo to host it firstly because he does a dope job, but I know he can pull in high views on just about anything. He has a good following. Advo is the only respected host I know and I wanted that dope artwork from K-Lion too. Advo is a dope lyricist too he just dropped Digital Dynasty 16 hosted by Saigon. Man I had seen Saigon on Entourage a few times so that was dope. HipHopLEAD: Lets face it .. 80 percent of remixes (especially in Hip Hop) usually turn out to be a dud compared to the original .. how can you be sure these are sure to please? Whiplash : Well the main thing is I got a lot of features using remixes of Black and Yellow and Motivated. They totalled close to 100 features on Coast 2 Coast Mixtapes. I know they say you’re guaranteed that many slots but that aint true. DJs can choose not to feature your song even if you pay. Nothing is sure to please but I actually really like the famous songs even without me on them. So that is important. The Whip-Mixes I do I usually love the original song first and if it feels like I could be on it I can do a remix. I know I need to do the song as good or better but I just do me over their music. Some songs are so perfect I don’t wanna touch them though. Not Afraid, Love The Way You Lie by Eminem. I heard a lot of rappers doing remixes on the Coast 2 Coast Mixtapes so that inspired me to do it too. Just having fun and recording over music/beats I love. Some of the backing tracks to these songs are such hits you could almost throw anyone on these joints and they would sound alright. I will try just this group of songs on a mixtape and maybe be done with it. It is just a way to make people pay attention to my original songs. See how it goes? HipHopLEAD: Can you give us a sneak peek into the mixtape? What can we expect? Whiplash : HipHopLEAD: We heard you are working on a Joint- Ep with Los Angeles emcee Khaki Blue. First of all… How did that come about? Whiplash : Khaki Blue actually approached me via email. It was probably because he had listened to Digital Dynasty – The Album Presented by Tha Advocate & Ballerstatus.com (dope album). I know he had 2 joints on that album and so did I so I am sure he heard those, which made him want to do it. He got my email address from Advo (Thanks Advo). I checked out Khaki’s music online and he reminded me of that Ice Cube west side shit I loved. I grew up on that style of music. In the beginning he just wanted to do one record featuring me, I did a verse on that and he really liked it. Next thing you know he wanted to do an EP album. So we have been in contact ever since, just going back and forth putting tracks together. He is a dope artist and professional too. HipHopLEAD: Is it hard to make these songs when you guys are not physically in the same studio? Whiplash : Nah it is really easy. Funny thing is I have not done any of my recordings in a studio, just my bedroom. Khaki just sends me a song to drop a verse on with the original beat and vocal wav files to mix everything together. I also sent him songs to drop verses or choruses on and he would send everything back; it has been a fast process so far. This is how anyone does it these days, it suits my style because I can concentrate on my own. HipHopLEAD: Whats the title of the EP? Whiplash : I tossed a few title names up in the air but it has not been decided yet. We are just trying to finish 8 songs and then get a title. It should or will be a title connected to our artist names or where we are from, will see. We want to do a promotion for it. HipHopLEAD: When is it going to drop? Whiplash : No talk of drop dates but it will drop soon enough. At least sometime in 2011. We have pretty much finished 7 of the 8 songs but if it goes above 8 tracks the date will be extended. HipHopLEAD: Alot of people were really intrigued with your last interview and the diversity of the Australian music scene. Since we last spoke has anything been changing down there to give you more avenues to showcase your artistry? Whiplash : Nah nothing ay…I am really living in the wrong country (laughs). I know coming from Australia will be an asset once I can break through but the reality is I have nothing here. I used to get shows as a rock rap act and it’s crazy because all the famous aussie hip hop groups are stealing all the limelight now. I had a promoter not sign me because I had US sounding music and accent. When my accent is from my life living in other countries and growing up on US rap. I grew up around the world. Aussie rap didn’t exist when I was growing up. I don’t have that style or accent. Hip Hop is taking over in Australia but the depth of talent is getting lost in the mass. HipHopLEAD: It’s known you often freestyle your verses instead of writing them. Do you have any plans to actually construct a song the most common way? Whiplash : I used to do it the more constructed way but it sounded so planned that people could predict my directions. Yeah I freestyle every song delivery but I don’t freestyle every lyric. I feel like freestyling puts a little magic into it, like I can’t even spit that part again until I listen to it a million times. I want people to rap my songs but I don’t want them to (laughs) but yeah I am definitely learning to try and not do it so freestyled but I can’t help it. When I record I lose my mind in a way and I just do it like that. Constructing songs makes it easier to remember the songs so I will do it that way again. If anything my Whip-Mixes and Khaki Blue album is more constructed. HipHopLEAD: Is it possible for Whiplash to get radio play in Australia? Whiplash : Nah…But I used to go to the local radio station for interviews and get songs from my album played. I have given up seeking that direction because they seem to only play the major artists, same old shit just a different day kind of thing. I hope to get on national radio one day if I stop swearing and sign to a major label. A label I was with called Dasvibes was telling me to “Make clean versions of every song” I was like that’s bullshit. That was another empty promise of a label that did nothing for my career advancement. HipHopLEAD: Are there even any hip hop stations down there yet?!?! (Laughs) Whiplash : Lol yeah but its best to be on the biggest radio station and it is difficult to get a song to those radio stations because if I send in my album I am just another independent artist sending in his demo. My shit would be on the pile with the other million others that don’t get a chance. You really need to know someone or pay someone. HipHopLEAD: Maaaaaaaaan .. You know how we do over here. It’s about that time to get a little wild and crazy. We are gonna ask some questions out the norm so get ready. Ok… Is Fosters really the best beer? Whiplash : It is the best marketed beer overseas for sure (laughs). I think they just brand Australia to it as part of their marketing campaign. I don’t drink it…couldn’t pay me to but I am more into spirits. You know they call spirits “chick’s drinks” but actually beer doesn’t get me half as drunk as spirits and if I do drink I drink to get drunk. If I am the one drinking hard liquor who you calling chick? Beer is too soft for me. I guess that’s why I see people drinking full cartons cause they need the lot to drop (laughs). HipHopLEAD: If you can come to any place in the U.S. tomorrow… Where would it be? Whiplash : I would live in California/ LA or New Jersey or NY because when I was on the road I went to those places. I went to the US several times. I would live in those places because of the music scenes, parties, women, weather, beach and more. I have nothing much living in Australia. I only really have my family and partner which people would say is everything. I mean I would move to the US for my music career. HipHopLEAD: What rapper irks your soul and makes you cringe when you hear their music? Whiplash : Some of the aussie rappers and probably aussie rappers listening to me. Songs of me that suck make me sick. I like most nationalities rap but not some of the British/UK rappers. I grew up traveling to different countries, I am part Polish and Australian but I would love to see a good Aboriginal rapper make it, that would be a true aussie rapper being that the Aboriginals were Australian first. HipHopLEAD: Let’s say a music career doesn’t by chance pan out… What would Whiplash being doing career wise? Whiplash : That is why I focus on a few things, at the moment I study Business by correspondence. I set up a small eBay business recently. I had a semi-pro sport career for ten plus years that didn’t pan out in the end and it’s hard to deal with that disappointment but I became a hip hop artist before that happened. So there are always disappointments but something next for everyone. The cross roads are scary but I had to experience that already. You know I deal with that every day and I deal with that thought, “What if I don’t make it? Am I tripping?” And I have tried to quit and I can’t because opportunities come up every time I give up, I guess letting go has made this continue. Whatever will be will be comes to mind. I contemplate every day giving up what I am pursuing. I would be doing exactly what I am doing now if it doesn’t pan out, which is working or looking for work, studying and trying to get by. It’s not the end of the world when something doesn’t pan out but it’s good to find what works and quickly before it’s too late because nothing lasts forever, we all live we all die. I just want to survive and have somewhere to eat and sleep. Making it and making extra money is just a bonus on top of necessities. That’s the thing. I don’t rap to make money. I don’t make money from music, not yet. If I do make it I will appreciate it more than anything. Whatever makes a living for me is good enough. I love doing music and if I could make money from making love to music that is the dream. For now, it is just reality; a broke student with opportunities to pursue music so that’s what I’m going to do. HipHopLEAD: Last time we chopped it up we were talking about the mass sightings of dead fish and birds. Since then it’s been Earthquakes and Tornados. Do you think the world gonna end soon or what? Whiplash : Yeah, I don’t think the world is going to end, but the earth may end us if there is no change and improvement to how we treat the environment. That’s if it isn’t too late. I think the earth can heal itself but we do know it is relentless when it is damaged or threatened by our continual pollution, energy consumptions, ect. The earth is an element we have no control over, we just live on it and with it. I think the world’s population is too large, China is leading the way with the child limit, they understand that need to cut down the population which cuts down energy use overall. I guess they had too many people already though but seriously it is overcrowded in the world. I grew up in the ocean every day of my life and those types of elements outside of our little lives are hard core. The ocean can just pick you up, slap you, hold you down until you almost drown or drown. That is the kind of relentlessness we are dealing with. Respect the earth would be the way to go because we will never win a war against the earth’s elements. HipHopLEAD: Back to the norm…. Whiplash Part. 2 Whiplash what’s good man? Hey what up HipHop.org! Thanks for another interview! Shout out to Tha Advocate for hooking it up too. It's been a little while since we last chopped it up with you. How would you say your music career has changed since then? Since the last interview everything has somewhat progressed. I feel like I am in a better place of opportunities. One year ago my image was damaged a little getting bad reviews in the UK and Australia but now I feel the US is on my side. The US response has been nothing but positive. This year I have had hundreds of mixtape features that I didn’t have in 2010. I have formed good relationships with people in the Hip Hop industry. I have been doing drops for Coast 2 Coast DJs like Tony Harder and DJ Femmie. I have been getting more followers on Twitter and generally just growing. My Youtube channel is up to 10,000 video views now and I don’t even have a real movie on there. Advo told us you are working on an EP with Khaki Blue... Is that true? Yeah it’s true, I am happy about that. Especially when it actually worked well. We have been working on that EP recently. I am looking forward to that project. I listen to the demo mixes every day. I am just waiting for a couple more tracks to mix. Some tight gangsta shit in there. I’m not a gangsta but like I say in one song called Gangsta “I’m not a gangsta but I am only because I bang bitches and listen to gangsta rap, I bang them to that.” I had some hook ups with women overseas and that’s what I did on a date. We just listened to gangsta rap and banged each other all night, it was tight (laughs). When is it gonna drop? It will drop soon enough because we are almost finished. I am working on the mixes as they come in and then when it is all done we will get the project mastered, artwork will be by K-Lion and we will start promoting tracks from the album after. Doing it this way is a good way to share promotion and production costs. We will promote the music in some places when it is ready, Digital Dynasty, Coast 2 Coast and more.

I am sure the single will have to be the strongest song we can find. The beats on this album are great, a lot of strong sounding beats. The album will have a couple of featured artists. One will be J-Flow from Khaki Blue's record label Big Faces. So ... word on the street is you got a project called Whip-Mix where you remixed alot of the big hits in the last few years. When is that supposed to drop? Yeah I am putting that out as soon as it is finished. Tha Advocate is hosting the album, he is doing drops, adding some sounds to the album. I am shooting for June 20th or after. All of these songs were a bunch of my favorite songs from famous artists over the last year or two. I basically just pick out a song I like, if I feel it can be remixed I will do my thing over it. Some I chose didn’t work so I deleted those ones. Is that coming before the EP with Khaki Blue or after? Whip-Mix tape will be out through Coast 2 Coast Mixtapes first and then the Khaki Blue Whiplash EP will follow. I am just finding ways to promote my name and music. I have never done a mixtape so I wanted to release a mixtape of remixes with a few original songs on it. I want to do a mixtape of original songs later on. I have never done real collaborations with artists. The Khaki Blue collaboration is my first real collaboration and I think it is dope. Sometimes in music I have had beginners luck. One thing about our last interview that was dope was you gave such an honest opinion on things ... so I want to know... Are you trying to emulate Eminem's style with the blonde hair and the multiple "Rape" references in your music? How can you not be pigeon holed when you’re a white rapper with blonde hair? I am kind of glad Eminem has his natural hair color now. I looked up to Eminem growing up and I wanted to learn from the best, yet not copy him. If you look at it all... all rappers have similarities in some way or another. My style and voice tone is different to Eminem, sometimes my lyrics will be a little similar... but no shit I heard two songs where he said my lyrics, but I’m underground. Eminem once said he wanted to say lyrics before other rappers did and he is. I believe all music artists are getting their lyrical/music ideas from the same source. From the same part of the brain, the same part of the spirit or soul, or from the same experiences. (Laughs) yeah people say I am too honest! I am too honest for my own good but that is who I am and coming from where I come from people say anything they think whether it is positive or negative. I grew up on rap music. That teaches me to be open and say what I’m thinking and feeling, just being free. I lived a pretty free life compared to the usual society like prison life. I like to be free from restraints. I just got to that point in my life where I didn’t give a fuck anymore too, like so many, so I guess I can come off like Eminem but I just feel that same way and if people didn’t know I have natural blonde hair. I come from that suburban life yet lived traveling around the world in a street like matter. Life at home was not rich but pretty good, life living overseas was ghetto for me. In Australia people say the word rape a lot. We say heavy shit all the time which is just to be funny, its normal. Rape is a heavy word, it shocks people but when I use it at times I’m not even literally talking about rape. I know someone that was raped and it’s fucked up, makes me want to kill motherfuckers that rape women. Like come on, rapists just jerk off or go online for porn or to a prostitute if you can’t get any, you sick fucks. Backpackers women get raped where I live but the police cover it up so it doesn’t destroy tourism. Makes me sick but I think women are part of the problem too. Women should do anything to fucking escape a potential rape or rape; dumb bitches need to stop getting in that situation and if you do get in that situation cut his dick off or something please. In Australia we say cunt all the time, at least the street beach type community where I come from. We say shit we do and don’t mean all the time, it’s part of our culture and language here in Australia. I grew up traveling the world on and off so I could speak anyway I wanted to on the street and at the beach, in the ocean. I even worked at a factory for 8 months and people were always, “Hey it’s so fucking busy today ay; cunt of a fucking job ay fuck”. This filthy slang is everywhere in Australia, it is my environment and I think it is hilarious, feels fucking good. WOW that was a long response!! Speaking of Eminem ... did you have a chance to hear his new EP? If so, what are your thoughts on it... I have heard a few songs from the EP and I am a fan of Royce and Eminem so it can only please me. I heard a few of those songs in the mixtape world. I think they are a good team and it is great Eminem has found someone to team up with since the D12 days. Slaughterhouse with Eminem is the new D12 in a way. I think we will see some big shows and moves. I respect this new EP because it is more street/rap and not as commercial as Recovery. I am happy Eminem has decided to work with some real rappers like Royce, Slaughterhouse, Yelawolf and more. Eminem sounds better doing underground style rap with raw talented artists. We saw a softer more introspective side of you on the Digital Dynasty Album. Your song "Take It" showed you speaking from a deep manner. What type of real life experiences made you record that song? I have experienced a lot in my life. I have been knocked back a lot my whole life and I have lost a lot. I had to rebuild my life since 2005. In 2005 I hit rock bottom losing my fiancé, career and place to live. I was living overseas a lot and moved back to Australia. I feel like I have had a couple of different lives. My music really kicked in at that cross road in 2005, so that was like a new birth for me, Whiplash was born. I used to be a singer but the more shit I went through the less I sang because I only sang when I was happy. I can use singing to show sadness and depth. I still sing it feels good. To me singing is from my soul and rapping is everything else. The music on ‘Take It’ just gave me that feel for the hook to sing. I went through a lot of relationship break ups in my life and it was hard because breaking up with friends or lovers was like a death in the family. I can be a deep person so I wanted to show that side of me in my music. I can be cut throat harsh but I wanted people to understand that being bad is also from being sad. I am a Gemini and I like to show my different personalities, different sides. Sometimes I am chill, sometimes I want to kill, I think everyone is like this. Do you have any more songs like that coming out soon? As long as I keep my soul I will always have joints like that. You know it is hard to find joints like that one musically. I have another one that was a little similar called ‘Last Song’. It just had a nice hook with lyrics “So go with my flow gotta know, this could be my last song, the last song that I sing, the last song that I bring.” I wrote it when I felt like never singing again because rap was taking my career further and singing wasn’t. For years Australia was not accepting my style of doing both singing and rapping. Discriminating racist pricks in the industry would say, “You have to choose one, choose a style, you can’t do a whole album like that, you’re not black.” My response was always that I can do what the fuck I want cunt. I am definitely looking for more joints like that and a beat like that. Let’s scroll back a bit to the EP with Khaki Blue. Khaki is a known street dude turned rapper out in Cali and you have your wild out of control rhymes from the land down under. How the hell did you guys link up?? (Laughs) yeah its nuts but it’s what is up. You know I love that he is from that life, every community seems gang orientated whether they are gangster or not. Everywhere I traveled to in the world was territorial in and out of the ocean. I guess I sound crazy because I lived a crazy insecure travel life with no money, lived on the road, slept on the street, slept on beaches, got lots of women, lived gutter, slept at airports to pursue a sporting career and wrote lyrics about it. I just wrote about my life. I have been pretty insecure my whole life but I am working on becoming more secure financially and psychologically but it might be too late. I know if I can make some money I won’t be as fucking depressing and fiery. They say money can’t buy happiness but I’ve lived long enough without money to know that if you don’t have money you can’t do anything. Khaki contacted me by email and it was on. I am sure he listened to my joints on the Digital Dynasty Mixtape Series and the Digital Dynasty - The Album. He keeps his ear to the street which is the mixtapes series. Yeah it’s crazy but it’s gonna be dope. You know how we do at this time ... time to ask you some off the wall questions! I know every talented artist will always nurture talent, either their own children or by signing new artists, even inspire new artists. If the young generations grow up looking at the history they are bound to recycle it and recycle it in their own way or recycle it in a new way. If humanity is still here in 20 years I am sure Hip Hop is one of the only voices and one of the only spoken truths remaining. All the recorded works now will pass the truth to the next generation and they will feed off it. If you could smash any famous chick who would it be? Actresses: Kate Hudson (always had a crush), probably Miley Cyrus (some fucked up hot ugly crush)(laughs), Music: Nicki Minaj (not because everyone would), there are so many hot porn actresses, that’s where it is at boys! Most of those chicks are off the charts, I would smash a porn star. What is the craziest thing you ever did after a night of partying? I wouldn’t say crazy but I got the chance for a minajatwa! And I am not famous so that’s pretty successful. That was one of the best things I ever did. Doesn’t happen to normal people a lot so men if you are listening I recommend it, you have to do it before you settle down. I dreamed of shit like that all my life and only happened to me once, I fell into it. When it happened I milked that shit all night and all morning encase it never happened to me again lol. It’s hard to pull off though because most women selfishly want one man to themselves. It just fell into place for me. I didn’t plan it so it was completely unexpected. I had opportunities before that time but I didn’t see them or think it was possible. To all men, keep your eyes open, senses high. Sometimes artists have names for there albums that don't apply to there content. Sometimes they hit the bullseye. Whiplash slam dunked his album title with his "Losing Control". Whiplash is a risk taker and has a sound that is def. not the norm. Some people might think it's bold, some might think it's weird. Whatever you think it is you have to respect the ambition to make music from the heart and not follow trends. Not too mention Whiplash is Australia's rising local star. The man from the land down under is now bringing some thing new to the table. The album kicks off with "Can't Handle It". It has a pull that will drag you in. Not too mention the creepy organ patches that blend into a very distorted and manipulated hook. The production value on this project is very current and set the foundation perfect for Whiplash when he spits his verses. "Ladidah" is another album stand out. It is almost a dance record, but still keeps that essential hiphop flavor. Whiplash has great tone when he sings his hooks. He sings the majority of his choruses throughout this project. Usually encouraging a rapper to sing ends up a dead end road (ex: Ja Rule), but for Whiplash it is something that works for him very well. Whip spits "I cant change the way things work out/ I just rearrange what I see and bring all the hurt out", on "Get Up On That". Another tune that is worth a mention is "Clap On". Kudos to the producer for making that into a beat. It's basically the popular "clap on commercial" meets some Swizz Beats sounding production. Whip spits verses throughout the album which sound almost freestyle, rather then actually written down. Not to make assumptions but if that is the case Whip's product would be more well received if he actually worked on crafting his word play and lyrics a little bit more. Two elements can make an artist's album a classic. Good Production and Great Lyrics. At times Whiplash spits show worthy lines that will make you rewind, but there are times you are trying to figure out which direction he was trying to go. If Whiplash manipulated that part of his music a little bit more we would have a solid gem. Overall "Losing Control" is something you would want to add to your collection. Hip-Hop has always been the music of taking chances and going against the system. The mainstream music made for this genre used to be just that. Nowadays when you turn on the radio you hear nothing but generic clowns beating a dead horse. Who takes chances anymore? Who is different? Not too many people are. It makes you appreciate the internet. If it wasn’t for the internet you may not have ever heard of Australia’s, “Whiplash”. We started seeing Whip appear on the internet on various high calibre mixtapes and features on numerous hip-hop sites. His style was different and reflects a country which is not on the Hip Hop global map yet. Whiplash is the artist that is leading the way to put Australia on the radar. His newest work is a 20 song album called, “Losing Control“. When first listening to “Losing Control″, the cinematic strings kick in, a few bars later the catchy vocoded “You can’t handle it” hook kicks in. Whiplash’s starts off with his Aussie delivery. He has a sharp tinny voice texture unlike anyone we heard to date. Much like Pro-Wrestlers, rappers have their own signature move. For example Jadakiss has the “eghh ha”, Jeezy has the “Yeaaaaah” adlibs, and Whiplash has something new...he has a repeat adlib which he uses every few bars. It’s catchy and would be fun to recite while partying after a few drinks. Or in Whip’s case a few “Fosters”. Nothing people like more than some repetition on a dope beat. Whiplash has an energetic beat selection. “Clap On” is comical, while still being full of synths and west coast whistles to make the speakers thump. The hook is sampled from the popular 1990′s commercial from “The Clapper”. The sampled “clap on, clap off” meshes well this Whip’s vocals. This song is definitely an infectious club banger. ”Spaceship Swag” could have been left for a mixtape. It was definitely the least of the best. “Growing Seed” is a high tempo anthem for the ride, as well as “Chances”. Whiplash really has a dope voice for singing a hook and in this case taking those “Chances” really paid off. “Egg Shells” and “Tropical Shawdy” are a few prime examples to catch Whip’s hypnotizing style of chorus making as well a different delivery to make the total package. One thing that separates Whiplash from a lot of the competition is his gift for writing hooks and bridges. You might hear this emcee singing some of them or chanting a few rhymes in a whisper format. Whatever formula he uses for his hooks seems to work. On the other hand If Whip would craft his lyrics a little more in a lyricist format this emcee has the potential to make it from the “Land down under” right to “the top of the world”. It's finally here, Digital Dynasty: The Album. After announcing it in early February, and working on it for more than two months, we are excited to finally release the first official album in our long-running digital mixtape series. In conjunction with New Jersey rapper Tha Advocate, the first Digital Dynasty album boasts 20 tracks from ill up-and-coming artists from around the country and a few overseas. "It's finally here," boasts executive producer Tha Advocate. "It took a little time, but this is dope. This might be the best, if not one of the best, compilations for on-the-come-up artists." For the official Digital Dynasty, we enlisted a slew of artists who've appeared on previous volumes of our free mixtape. It's time for them to shine. "An album is a whole different animal than a mixtape," admits Advo. "You have heavy graphic designs, mastering, and a quality standard involved when making this possible. We have some Digital Dynasty regulars and some new talent. We got artists from the US and all the way to Australia. This is something you need to check out." As always, the digital version of the album is free for download below, but we're pressed up a limited amount of copies for sale. So, what we're doing is gearing up for our first official CD, titled Digital Dynasty: The Album. "Our mixtape movement has went very far in such a short time, but now it's time for an album. The difference between the two are day and night," Advo explains of the upcoming release. "Whatever artists that make the album will have something to add to there resume... "We are stressing quality over quantity for this project and we will only select a choosen few to be on here," he continued. The upcoming official release will be released digitally, as well as on CDs for retail, and will include some of the undiscovered talent we've come across from all over the world.
